Mental Health Issues and Benefits of Technology with Montréal Cain
In this episode, Tim welcomes Montréal Cain, CEO, Director and Founder of HouseCall Wisconsin, LLC. He is a mental health advocate, educator, entrepreneur, and father. Growing up with a person with bipolar disorder, Mr. Cain saw first-hand how difficult it is to live with a mental health disorder in an environment where mental health issues were not talked about. One incident sparked him to start digging a little deeper. He ended up incorporating a for-profit and a non-profit business to make sure that we address some of these stigmas, provide any advancement of technology, any tools and resources that could help us manage our loved one’s illness. According to him, the benefit of technology will be for us, or it will leave us behind. What if it could save our lives?
Episode highlights:
05:16 – Mr. Cain shares about his background and what sparked his interest in the mental health sphere.
09:03 – When you can identify a challenge or a problem, you can solve it. Once I understood that there are different remedies and best practices that can be implemented throughout the family, I knew that there was something that I could do. I just did not know how.
25:25 – Resources – just going to your local library is not enough. There is millions of evidence-based research available on the internet. Every single state has a county specifically focused on mental health. In Milwaukee, it’s Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division. There is also a phone number: 211 – where you can find an abundance of resources.
27:53 – What if we’re able to develop something to know where our loved ones are? MERA is a mental health preventive service and stands for Monitor, Engage, Recommend, Advocate.
32:23 – For some families where they do not have access to this technology, we started a non-profit organization, HouseCall Foundation, where we would provide the phone, pay the phone bill, and pay for those services for up to 36 months per family.
